This is irony at its starkest, although it hit me at a moment when cynicism and black sarcasm had no business around me.
In six days time, I am getting married. Today was the day of the first of the rituals - tilak 'chumaaoun' and 'lagan'. Typical Bihari customs, the essence of which is that elder married ladies give blessings of a propitious married life to the bride-to-be. The exact term in Hindi for the custom is 'suhaag dena' - donating some of the good luck of their happily married lives to the younger woman.
An aunt of mine is a widow, and she understandably abstained. What caused me to feign a sudden coughing attack to conceal a burst of inexplicable laughter was the fact that two of my other aunts came up for the auspicious rituals. One of them has been deserted by her husband, who has proceeded to marry a second time and the other has constantly been a sad victim of domestic violence at the hands of her spouse. That these two ladies be allowed to participate is understandable - senior ladies of my house are not that indecent as to publically insult them by preventing their participation. What takes the cake, I thought, is how their own conscience gave them the permission to carry on that act!
I concluded that they were certainly unaware of the significance of the custom, although, I do believe that avoiding the question why and saving face in public was a more plausible reason for their behaviour.
The observation insn't an original one - it happens everyday. But the nakedness of the act as it unfolded before my eyes made it more impactful for me.

Congratulations for marriage.I remember though ,you were hell against marriage.Hope you continue blogging after marriage.
The husband could have been easily booked for polygamy under Hindu Marriage Act , while other aunt could have filed a case under IPC 498A.
I think they should fightback instead of wasting time at a marriage ceremony.
I have sympathy for widow Aunt and I feel you should keep her in high spirits(eventhough she may abstain from rituals).

gosh deepti.. look at what u've written..

I mean the women came to bless u and celebrating YOUR wedding.. What logic is there in preventing them from coming.. If I was u, I'd love to invite the widow aunt to have a great time celebrating..

U've let me down lady..!

Neways.. Have a great wedding and enjoy.

Hello Deeps,

Congratulations.

Got your invitations but couldn't make it...you knowww...

Am happy for you and yes..the wishes of the ladies were from her saved capital from a good past. I hope you've taken their blessings. Nothing is to be ashamed of...for which they were not responsible.

Forgive me if I sound didactic.

Love you.
Regards.
June

@ Viv
You misunderstand dude. There was never any question of preventing aunts - widowed or otherwise - from attending my wedding or blessing me. The blog merely highlighted the irony of certain ceremonies being performed by certain ladies. The rhetoric was against women who suffer in silence nd pretend tht all's well and against people who mindlessly perform ceremonies nd rites and rituals.

@ June
Thanks lady :)

Hey one bad news, the High Court of Patna has acquitted 6 out of 7 convicts in DM Murder case. And Anand Mohan's death sentence has been reduced to lifer. What an agony?
I think Viv was right when he reminded us of Shibu Soren at the time of their convistion by a lower court.

*Sighs*
Real life will continue to be disappointing. Btw, it was expected news...the local buzz was that the judge chairing the case was of the same caste as some of the accuseds...lol at the utter idiocy!!

Oh Sorry, I forgot that it was Piyush who mentioned about Shibu Soren.Actually I had a feeling that the 7 convicted criminals(for DM murder) may not get support either from State Govt or Central Govt and the High Court may upheld the decision by sessions.
DM krishnaiah is surviwved by his wife and 2 daughters. There was a kind or Moral Pressure on his wife to forgive the accused people as it has been so long that they are strugling in courts,it has affected their Political careers etc etc. It was also told that the culprits repent for their deeds and plead forgiveness on the grouds of foreign-dharma(Philosophy).

His family is under two types of pressures(constantly) to prevent them from appeal at SC.

One is to face dire consequences.

Second is diplomatic pressure to forgive and forget.Show that you are so great that you forgive them like Jesus did.

I was ammused that this philosophy of forginess has no takers when it comes to terrorists like Kasab. The is no religious guru to advocate his repentance.Actually those religious Gurus and pseuo-intellectuals cannot afford to do so in current circumstances. They are scared.

Sadly these criminals like Shahabuddin,Pappu Yadav,DP Yadav have huge fan following and support.People say that "they may be bad/criminals for OTHERS but not us.Why should we care as long as they are good to us".

Now I must tell you the basic philosophy of CRIME(Criminal law), a criminal is punished not because he did wrong to individual, but a CRIME is a WRONG against SOCIETY.
If its a wrong against some individual,it is a civil conflict or a Tort.
This is a basic philosophy that a CRIME is a wrong against society at large. Same is philosophy of our DHARMA.
The criminals need to be punished. If anybody prevents a criminal in anyway or votes for him,he is also against DHARMA and should be punished. So all of us who vote for these criminals are also criminals because for some reason or the other we supported them.We should be punished the same way Drona,Bhishma,Karna were punished.

lastly as Deepti is a follower of Mahabharatha....

'dharma eva hato hanti dharmo raksati raksitah'
"It is dharma that destroys when destroyed; it is dharma again
That protects when protected."

`yato dharmastato jayah'
"where there is dharma, there
victory also is".
